How to judge a Chinese hospital properly
“Grade 3A” is only the entry ticket. Department strength, case volume and subspecialty decide the outcome.
What Grade 3A actually means
Chinese hospitals are graded on a three-tier system, with Grade 3A at the top. The tier reflects bed count, department breadth, staffing ratios, equipment and research output, and it requires the hospital to handle complex cases. What it does not tell you is whether a particular department is strong — thousands of hospitals hold it.
Four criteria that actually matter
01
Key-specialty designation (国家临床重点专科)
An externally reviewed designation at department level — a far stronger signal than the hospital's overall reputation.
02
Annual volume for your specific procedure
Ask how many of your operation the surgeon performs per year. Under thirty for a complex procedure is worth questioning.
03
Surgeon subspecialty, not seniority
A chief orthopaedic surgeon may do almost exclusively spines. Subspecialty predicts fit; title does not.
04
Complication readiness
ICU availability, on-site blood bank, and whether the department reviews its own complications. You want specifics, not reassurance.
Four practical details patients overlook
- Does the hospital have an international patient department (国际医疗部)?
- Can they issue an invitation letter for a medical (M) visa?
- Can they provide discharge summaries and imaging reports translated into English?
- Do their payment counters accept international cards?
