The most valuable money a medical traveller spends is often the smallest: a remote second opinion, before any flight is booked.
What a second opinion is not
It is not a rejection of your doctor. Good physicians request them routinely. It is a structured review of your imaging, pathology and history by a specialist who has no prior relationship with your case, answering a specific question: is the proposed treatment the right one for me.
Why it matters more when travelling
When treatment is in your own city, changing your mind is cheap. When it involves two flights, a visa, two weeks of lost work and a non-refundable package fee, the cost of a wrong plan multiplies. A written review forces clarity before you commit.
The three outcomes
Roughly a third of reviews confirm the plan and improve confidence. A third refine it — a different implant, a staged approach, an additional test that changes the surgical route. And a third find that the procedure is not indicated at all, or that a conservative path should be tried first. That last group is the reason insurers increasingly require a second opinion before authorising overseas treatment.
What to send
The radiology report plus the original DICOM files (not screenshots), pathology slides or reports, a current medication list, relevant lab results, and a short history in plain language: when symptoms started, what has been tried, what has failed. Include your specific question — "is disc replacement appropriate given my MRI" gets a sharper answer than "please advise".
How to read the reply
Look for three things: whether the specialist engages with your actual images rather than restating the report, whether they name the alternative options they considered, and whether they state their uncertainty honestly. A review that promises a guaranteed outcome is a marketing document, not a medical opinion.
The version we offer
Our pre-travel review connects your records to a specialist at a partner Grade 3A hospital, and returns a written summary in English within three to five working days. It is included in the China Safety Pack and available standalone. If the answer is "do not travel", we will tell you that — it is cheaper for us than an unhappy patient.
This site provides medical travel coordination services only. We are not a hospital, clinic or medical provider, and we do not diagnose or treat. All clinical decisions are made by licensed physicians at the treating hospital. Cost figures are indicative and not a quotation. Patient stories reflect individual, self-reported experiences and are not a guarantee of outcome.
